Opulence. Glamor. Luxury. These are just some of the words one might associate with the ‘Roaring 20s’ era portrayed in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. With the movie version of the novel directed by Baz Lurman opening next week, this luxurious lifestyle will soon be on the mind of many and will likely inspire new brides to adopt Gatsby’s jubilant party style for their weddings. But what would a Gatsby party look like today? An amazing team of Southern California wedding vendors got together to find out and designed what is a perfect example of the type of wedding celebration a modern day Gatsby might throw. Using the movie and novel as inspiration, the team combined graphic patterns and a mix of vintage and modern furniture to bring the Gatsby party into 2013. They wanted to design a celebration that felt opulent but wasn’t too over the top or stuffy. Something that brides and grooms today could identify with.
The groom wore a three-piece linen suit — very Gatsby-esque– and the bride looked absolutely show stopping in a Spring 2013 Lazaro gown that featured art-deco inspired embellishments but was so much more than the expected 20s-era sheath dress.
To give the party a more modern feel, they incorporated colorful florals and unexpected geometric patterns. The main design feature that inspired the look initially was a beautiful hard cover edition of The Great Gatsby that features a beautiful rose-gold scallop pattern. They used that pattern throughout the entire design of the party, from the stationery to the linens, and even the cake. The scallop design was paired with polka dot linens on the table, which kept the design very graphic, fresh and fun, while still very luxurious.
The couple danced to music by the amazing and fun band The New Recessionaires whose style is of the period, but with lyrics have a decidedly modern twist, a perfect fit for this celebration.
